A Whistling Language

Wednesday - 02/24/2021A young woman I knew a number of years ago is now a Ph.D. student. Over the past six years she has traveled extensively, learned a number of languages, lived and studied in several other countries. Last month she started a blog that I'm following. It’s called "Books 'n' Backpacks: Finding Adventure in Everyday Life."

The other day she suggested a number of online places where one could start to explore that special adventure. Here’s one I wanted to share with you. It’s about the whistled language of the island of La Gomera. Not only had I never heard of La Gomera, but I hadn’t known there was such a thig as a language expressed entirely through whistles. The language is intricate indeed. It should be noted, though, that – like the guy talking too loudly on his cellphone – it is an entirely public language. Be sure to say only those things you’re comfortable having everyone on the island hear.

In the meantime, why don’t you accept her dare to explore some new possibilities for adventure?
