Comfort or Solution?

Tuesday - 04/06/2021 — One of the lessons I teach in my online memoirs covers the various ways to present conversations when people write the stories of their lives. Not every memoir story needs to include dialogue, but when a conversation is there, it’s important to write it well so it sounds natural.

We talk a lot, therefore, about the ways men and women differ in their communication styles. I know this is a sweeping generalization, but women tend to listen in order to offer comfort, while men tend to listen to figure out how they can fix a problem. That’s why I was struck by sheer wonder when I read this comment from a man who could not only tell the difference between those two styles, but was willing to ask what his wife needed in any communication event.

Sounds to me like a miracle.
