How to Prevent ...

Friday - 10/29/2021 — I guess I’m lucky because I don’t get anxiety attacks, so I didn’t pay much attention to this meme-borne advice when I first saw it.

But then I realized this is a great way simply to bring myself to a centered position no matter where or when I am, no matter what I’m dealing with, no matter how tired or exasperated or even how happy I am.

The trick for me is to remember to look around. How often do I go through life without seeing what I’m looking at? Unfortunately, quite often. You know how it is—you’re driving down the road on your way to somewhere; you get there; you can’t recall the drive. Or you’re having a conversation with a friend and the two of you get interrupted; then the friend says, “What were we just talking about?”—and you can’t remember the topic. That’s happened to me more times than I care to admit.

The value of this meme is that it encourages me to count the 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 things I’m concentrating on. That way I have a better chance of truly seeing, touching, hearing, smelling, feeling what I see, touch, hear, smell, or feel.

How about you? Would you like to try this once or twice and see if it works for you?
