Saturday - 02/13/2021 — Good morning! It’s Saturday laugh time. And why on earth does augh sound like aff in that word? Just one more example of the enigmas of the English language and the ways in which it borrowed from so many different languages and cultures to form the potpourri of words we take for granted.
The word queue, for instance. As noted here, it’s really just a Q followed by four silent letters. It’s French, of course. Only the French would string together all those vowels to get one sound.
So for now, until Monday, adieu.
