Virtual Surgery

Tuesday - 02/23/2021 — I found this article from CBC News to be so fascinating I wanted to share it with you. Apparently, because of the pandemic, hospitals have had to cancel a lot of scheduled surgeries, which means that surgeons aren’t keeping their skills up – and surgery students don’t get to observe surgeries.

So, the solution? Virtual surgery! There’s no blood involved. Docs can repeat the surgery over and over until they learn what they need to, students won’t hurt anybody while they’re practicing. There’s a cool video that shows what the virtual operations look like. Don’t worry—it doesn’t show any (virtual) blood.

This program may have come as a result of COVID, but just think of the long-term benefits: student doctors won’t have to practice on live patients until they’ve honed their skills to a fine degree.

Whew!
